Gaming Company Case Study: Konami

Konami is a Japanese entertainment and gaming conglomerate. They are responsible for many famous game series such as: Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania and many more. In video game culture Konami is also know for it's password 'the Konami code' which will usually grant some form of power-up in their games.

History

The company was founded on 21st March 1969 and was officially incorporated under the name Konami Industry Co. Ltd.  The companies founder and current chairman, Kagemasa Kozuki, previously ran a jukebox repair rental business before transforming his business into a manufacture of amusement machines for video arcades. Konami's first ever coin-operated video game was released in 1978, and they began to export products to the United States in the following year. Over time Konami produced more games and hit eventual success in 1981 with games like 'Frogger', 'Scramble' and 'Super Cobra'. As time went on Konami produced more and more successful games eventually becoming the big company that they are today.

Recent Criticism.

Recently Konami had received a lot of criticism for various reasons. One of these reasons was their cancellation of 'Silent Hills' for home video game consoles. The game was abruptly cancelled on April 2015 without any further explanation despite the critical acclaim and successes 'P.T', a playable teaser pf the game received.  Konami's CEO then went on to announce that Konami would stop making console games and instead move on to the mobile gaming platform. This decision was heavily criticized by the video gaming community.

Prosumer

Prosumer

Prosumer is a blend of the words 'consumer' and 'producer'. A prosumer is someone who both produces media and consumes media.

David Gauntlett

David Gauntlett  came up with the idea of a 'prosumer'. He said "We need to recognition that the separate categories of  'producer' and 'audience' are collapsing, as a growing number of people become creators, curators, arrangers and re-mixers of digital media".

Industry Fact File: New Line Cinema

Fact File: New Line Cinema

New Line Cinema is a American film studio that is owned by Warner Bros.

Origins

It was founded in 1967 by Robert Shaye as an independent film distribution company, later becoming a film studio. The studio went through many changes in ownership before eventually ending up in the hands of Warner Bros.

Ownership

In 1994 the studio was acquired by Turner Broadcasting System. Later Turner merged with Time Warner in 1996 and New Line was merged with Warner Bros. in 2008. Currently all films made by New Line Cinema are distributed by Warner Bros.

Highest Grossing Films

New Line Cinema's top 5 highest grossing films are:

1)The Lord the Rings: The Return of the King ($377,845,905)

2) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers ($342,551,365)

3) It ($327,481,748)

4) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ($315,544,750)

5) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ($303,003,568)

From this we can see that New Line Cinemas biggest successes came from their adaptations of  JRR Tolkien's novels.

In addition to this 'It' is the 4th highest grossing R rated movie to be released.

Upcoming Films

New Line Cinema has many upcoming films but by far the most notable two are: It: Chapter Two and Shazam.

It: Chapter Two will likely be very successful thanks to the success of the first movie but Shazam on the other hand may or may not be successful. Shazam is a adaptation so there is already a marketable audience for it but with recent failure with DC movies Shazam may or may not be a success.
