"Media representations are often created by the industries that produce them". To what extent do you agree with this statement?
I fully agree with this statement as the representations in media such as movies, TV and the news are created by the producers of said media. For example the stereotype that black people are criminals, violent and sporty is how black people are constantly represented in the media. Newspapers, TV shows and movies constantly represent black people with this stereotype and that is because the media producer has chosen to do so. There are many reasons why a media producer may want to represent a certain group such as black people in a certain way: perhaps they are trying to cater to a certain audience or maybe they want to make a point about an issue. Regardless of the reason media producers specifically choose how they are going to represent different groups within their media. Another example of this is how media producers will always choose to represent women as over-sexualised in order to cater to a male audience, this links to Laura Mulvey's theory of the 'Male Gaze' which states that women in media are passive and only their for men to look at. Mulvey developed her theory because of how women are represented within the media, this representation was created by the media producers themselves. The media producers create these representations and then constantly use them and reinforce them into society. Media representations are created by the industries that produce them.
